stinky needs a name

i've tended this garden of mine for 18 years now... and year after year
these mystery plants come up and i don't know what they are.

they are:
gorgeous but gross...
ravishing yet revolting...
stunning but also stinky...
fascinating and foul...
pretty yet putrid...

when i was pregnant with my first child, i couldn't go into the back yard
because i couldn't stand their smell...

it was that dead wet dog aroma (not that i've ever smelled a dead dog before,,,)

this summer, they smell like curry gone bad... really bad !!

their shoots come out early spring and today, they are about two feet high.
they smell so bad that they attract flies.

i let them grow this year so i could share them with you,
but they are coming down as soon as i finish writing this post.
they don't seem to spread... but it sure is hard to get rid of them.

so please, all you gardeners out there...
i would love it if you could identify this plant.

stinky needs a name !!!

  1. Dracunculus vulgaris. We had that in the yard of a house we rented.

  2. Oh I wish I could help you. Are you in a southern state? I'm in the pacific northwest and we don't get anything that looks like that. Though it does remind me of a carnivourous plant if it's attracting flies. So maybe you could google native carnivirous plant? Also, there should be master gardeners in your area, they may be able to help you. Hoping for a better gardening experience for you.

    1. no... i'm near you, in Victoria BC...its a rare plant alright because some of the master gardeners (my neighbour for example) still scratches her head over them.

  3. agreed, it looks like some sort of variety of pitcher plant to me. I wonder if someone planted them in an effort to keep the bugs down. Good luck on your search.
