for jim

this world
can be ugly,
but isn't it
beautiful?

                              -andy mcmahon

today marks the 33rd year anniversary of the ocean ranger disaster.
the ocean ranger was a semi-submersible mobile offshore drilling unit that sank in canadian waters.
it was drilling an exploration well in the grand banks area east of st. john's newfoundland for mobil oil of canada with 84 crew members on board when it sank.
there were no survivors of the accident.

jim, ian's oldest brother, was on board working as a mud logger
he was only 24 years old when the storm hit the rig

my children will remember their uncle through the music he listened to (which greatly influenced ian),
with the book their auntie sue wrote,
and through the commemoration of the ocean ranger.
